Description
Riojasaurus incertus - Not a quadruped
Temporal range: Late Triassic, Norian, between ~227-213 Ma
Length: Around ~6-10 metres
Probable mass: Around ~1-4 tonnes?
Etymology: Uncertain reptile from La Rioja
Riojasaurus was a large basal sauropodomorph that lived in what is now South America during the Late Triassic. Once thought to be quadrupedal, its anatomy suggested a bipedal animal. It was probably cathemeral, active in short intervals throughout the day.
Its leg bones were dense and solid, while its vertebrae were pneumatic.
