Description

Apatosaurus ajax - This one comes out much larger than most think...

Temporal range: Late Jurassic, Tithonian, ~152-150 Ma

Length: Est. >=30? metres
Probable mass: >=50? tonnes

Etymology: Ajax's deceptive reptile

Apatosaurus ajax is a species of large diplodocoid sauropod dinosaur that lived in what is now the Morrison Formation in North America. It was more robust than most other diplodocids. It was named after the Greek mythological hero Ajax.

Like that of other diplodocids, its tail may have been used as a whip to create loud noises and to defend itself against attackers. The sound produced by the whip of its tail probably reached over 200 decibels, making Apatosaurus the loudest creature known to science - the blue whale, the loudest living creature, produces sounds at about ~188 decibels. The massive sauropod could probably kill a human with only the sound of its whip, if it weren't for the fact that it lived over 150 million years before the first humans. Direct impact from its tail would likely have liquefied parts on contact.

Commonly estimated at between ~20-25 metres in length with a mass of ~20-30 tonnes, some specimens indicate that it grew much larger than this. Elements from those specimens, such as OMNH 1670, are all ~11-30% dimensionally larger than the equivalent bones from CM 3018, the mounted Apatosaurus louisae specimen at the Carnegie Museum. OMNH 1670 is a isolated fifth dorsal vertebra that indicates a creature more than 30 metres long, with a probable mass of roughly ~50-60 tonnes, give or take a few.

These giant apatosaurs were immature when they died. OMNH 1329 has a visible neurocentral fusion line, all of which were remodeled away in CM3018. A very large cervical rib, OMNH 1368, is unfused. In neosauropods, neurocentral fusion precedes fusion of the cervical ribs. In Diplodocus and Giraffatitan, the largest individuals with unfused cervical ribs are less than 80% the linear size of the largest known individuals. Assuming that this applies to Apatosaurus, an adult Apatosaurus ajax could probably reach lengths of around ~35-40 metres and masses in the region of ~90-110 tonnes, rivalling or even exceeding the largest titanosaurs in size.

A recent study in late 2015 indicates that apatosaurines, including Apatosaurus ajax, used their necks, which may have had studs or spikes, for combat.

I really like the choice of color schemes on this guy. Nice work!

Wouldn't the neck spikes be a bit bigger than that though? Maybe it's just me, but they look a little puny.
